Summer City: random poem
by children at Anderton Park Centre, summer 2009

We made cardboard dice. On each face of the dice, we wrote words about the city in the summertime. Then we threw the dice to write this random poem about spending the summer in Birmingham.

Cricket, wedding, hockey, holidays, school’s out! School’s out!
Sleep late, drama and art, holidays, school’s out! Relaxing, fighting,
Sleep late, daydreaming, wedding, rounders, cinema, hockey,
School’s out! Hockey, holidays, football, chillaxin’, playing X-box 360.

Drizzling, sweltering, barbecues, goosebumps, rainbow, sizzling,
Sweaty, rainbow, heatwave, rainbow, too cold, blue sky,
Rainbow, too cold, sizzling, boiling, blue sky, bright,
Sizzling, goosebumps, sizzling, sweltering, grey sky, sun.

Noisy, roadsigns, pavement, Brum, busy, beeping,
Lively, climbing trees, street, trees, roadsigns,
Noisy, trees, garden, Brum, trees, streets,
Pavement, pavement, city trees, streets, climbing.

Digbeth, Deritend, Birmingham, Brum
by children at Anderton Park Centre, summer 2009

Along Digbeth, Deritend, Birmingham, Brum,
buses rumbling, lorries grumbling, cars brumming, taxis humming,
along yellow sparkly double yellow lines,
along Digbeth, Deritend, Birmingham, Brum.

Along Digbeth, Deritend, Birmingham, Brum,
tall towers, sharp shiny buildings, brick and cement,
glass and plastic, concrete, metal,
along Digbeth, Deritend, Birmingham, Brum.

Behind Digbeth, Deritend, Birmingham, Brum,
in Floodgate Street, high arches like dark rainbows,
we peeped through the red door, key holes, locked gates,
behind Digbeth, Deritend, Birmingham, Brum.

Beneath Digbeth, Deritend, Birmingham, Brum,
a secret garden, black-grey-pink-green pigeons,
a secret river flowing by a broken boat,
beneath Digbeth, Deritend, Birmingham, Brum.

Come down to Digbeth, Deritend, Birmingham, Brum!
Come down to Digbeth, Deritend, Birmingham, Brum!
